Prophet dupes desperate woman

A 42-YEAR-OLD self-styled Epworth prophet, Erick Mupfumbati, yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with raping a 36-year-old lovelorn woman who had consulted him for healing.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before regional magistrate Adoniah Masawi facing a rape charge.

The woman testified her misfortunes mounted after the alleged incident and she had never been approached by any man since the abuse in 2012.

She told the court, she recently reported the matter to the police since for the past five years, she had been experiencing sleepless nights owing to visions in which the prophet would visit her and have se_xual intercourse with her.

The court heard the desperate woman approached Mupfumbati in January 2012, seeking his help after failing to get a husband.

To scare the complainant, Mupfumbati is alleged to have proceeded to show her two snakes before threatening to harm her if she disclosed the abuse to anyone.

On the day in question, the court heard, the woman entered into a room which was used as a “surgery” by Mupfumbati and after consultation, he told her she had deep incisions in her uterus and these were causing her misfortunes.

The State alleges Mupfumbati told the woman he was able to remove them, adding she would eventually get a husband.

The self-styled prophet then allegedly ordered the woman to take off her clothes and she complied after which he had se_xual intercourse with her without protection.

After the alleged incident, court heard, Mupfumbati showed the woman two claypots containing big snakes and threatened her with unspecified action if she disclosed the abuse.

However, in his defence, Mupfumbati denied the allegations, accusing the woman of framing him up because of bad blood between their families. Mupfumbati told the court that the woman’s mother was a “witch” and as such she was not content with staying next to a prophet for fear of being exposed.

The trial continues on Monday.

Timothy Makoni is prosecuting.
