Merrymakers who attended the Golden Pilsner Afro-fusion concert at Belgravia sports club felt cheated after police cut the night short.
Although concert organisers had made it clear that it would end at midnight, the police were quick to react once it got to 12am and could not entertain any performances afterwards and contemporary musician Jah Prayzah’s performance was also affected.
Residents from nearby suburbs have been battling Belgravia sports club, demanding that they stop staging late night shows which disrupt their peace.
They have already petitioned the Harare city council to have the current lease agreement terminated over Belgravia sports club’s continued staging of late night musical shows. Saturday’s developments came after Jah Prayzah and his Third Generation band came on stage around midnight when the show was supposed to have ended.
“Masoja muriko hereeeee!? Tine hurombo Jah Prayzah was supposed to perform up to 4am but our police have dismissed us from this area,” said Mabla on stage.
Fans who had braved the chilly weather received the news with mixed feelings but nonetheless Jah Prayzah went ahead with his performance. His manager Keen Mushapaidze was engaged by the police and heated arguments ensued. Jah Prayzah performed songs from his latest album, Mdara vachauya with baba Harare version of a Diamond Platinumz’s verse on Watora mari.
“We had problems with the police and all they wanted was to get Jah Prayzah performing less on his slot which wasn’t our problem. They must have spoken to the show organisers not us. Jah is a big artiste and you wouldn’t expect him to perform for less than an hour at such an event with so many of his followers crying for more,” said Keen.
The sports club must be falling out of favour after the Mafikizolo show which had a sound system that made nearby residents file a complait with the police. According to new rules any show to be hosted at the event must end at midnight. However, DJ Tira’s performances will be embedded into the minds of many as the South African afro-tainment guru lived to his billing. His deejay mix of HIP Hop, House and Rap brought the whole house up with sing along from his hits Won’t let go, Summertime and Feeling good.
“I had a wonderful time on stage, Harare is huge,” he said after his set. His South African counterpart Bucie must have left her enthuse back home after her slot almost sent merrymakers in yawns. She got her groove back towards the end but that wasn’t enough for the pleasure of the local fans who were only captivated when DJ Tira came after. Ammara lived her moments and she never disappointed as she warmed up the stage ridding on the Mukoko hit. She introduced her sister on stage and their duet left the crowd asking for more. Local DJs led by Ray Dizz, Fujee, Selekta Bass and others also captivated fans in one or different ways.
