Africa’s Richest Man Dangote Wants to Buy Arsenal FC and Fire Arsene Wenger

Europe’s longest-serving football club manager, Arsene Wenger could be out of a job if Africa’s richest man manages to buy Arsenal Football Club as he revealed.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Aliko Dangote said he intends to buy Arsenal and the first order of business as the new owner will be to sack Arsene Wenger. Dangote has a net worth of $12.5 billion and is currently constructing an oil refinery of around $11 billion in Abuja, Nigeria.

Arsene Wenger, a coaching veteran in the British Premier League clearly does not have a fan in Aliko Dangote. Wenger has won just three Premier League titles since arriving at Highbury in October 1996 but made up for it with seven FA Cup trophies.

The club finished fifth last season but Wenger signed to stay a further two years with the Gunners, a move some football pundits did not find sensible.

ESPN’s Mark Ogden argued that the Gunners were agreeing to two more years of mediocrity but the club’s majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke must have thought otherwise. Stan Kroenke controls what could be 67% of Arsenal while Russian billionaire, Alisher Usmanov has a stake of around 30%. Usmanov attempted to buy out Kroenke but the majority shareholder could not be persuaded. Dangote thinks this can be done.

He told Bloomberg, “If they get the right offer, I’m sure they would walk away. Someone will give them an offer that will make them seriously consider walking away. And when we finish the refinery, I think we will be in a position to do that.”
But that is not the kicker. What got the world talking is Dangote’s first move if he buys Arsenal. He said, “The first thing I would change is the coach. He has done a good job, but someone else should also try his luck.”

Arsene Wenger is going to be more concerned about the completion dates for the Abuja refinery than the Nigerians themselves. The writing is on the wall, Mr Wenger!

Dangote then added, “It’s a great team, well-run. It could be run better so I will be there. I will wait. Even if things change I will take it.”
