Ambazonia- UN Experts Warn Paul Biya

"We urge the Government to take all necessary measures in accordance with Cameroon's human rights obligations to end the cycle of violence," the experts said in a joint statement.

The Government of Cameroon must engage representatives of the English-speaking population in a constructive political dialogue and put an end to violence in the south-west and north-west, where the country's English-speaking minority is suffering from human rights violations, warned a group of UN experts.

Since 1 October, up to 17 people have been killed and dozens more injured and arrested during demonstrations in the English-speaking regions of the country.

Experts are concerned by reports of a series of measures taken by national authorities, including curfews, the ban on public meetings and other restrictions to prevent peaceful protests. Excessive use of force by the security services, injuries, mass arrests, arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment were also reported.

Freedom of expression would also have been limited by the blocking of Internet connections and access to social media platforms such as Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook, which a UN expert previously condemned.

"These restrictions must cease immediately and the Government must conduct a thorough, impartial and independent investigation into all allegations of human rights violations committed during and after the events of 1 October." The Government must take effective measures to prosecute and prosecute punish all those responsible for these violations.

"This call comes nearly a year after UN experts publicly urged the Government to end the violence against the English-speaking minority, following reports that English-speaking protesters Buea and Bamenda reportedly suffered excessive force.

The experts also denounced any use of violence against members of the security forces, after receiving reports that several people were killed last week.

Since December 2016, experts have repeatedly voiced their concerns directly to the Government of Cameroon and continue to monitor and seek clarification on alleged human rights violations in the north-west and south-west of the country. Ambazonia- UN Experts Warn Paul Biya
