Questions remain about the arrest of Cameroonian Julius Ayuk Tabe (known by the traditional honorific title of Sisiku) and nine other secessionists in Nigeria on Friday, 05 January.
The first is the appointed acting president of the imaginary state of Ambazonia, whose territory covers the northwestern and southwestern regions.
He was appointed to this position on July 8, 2017, at a meeting of the "Southern Cameroons Ambazonia Consortium United Front (Scacuf)" - a movement born last February, the union of several federalists and secessionist organizations (Scing, Scapo, Republic of Ambazonia, SCYL, Anglophone Civil Society Consortium of Cameroon - CACSC, Morisc, Southern Africa Forum, Scinga and the Ambazonia Governing Council) that do not always agree on the goals to be achieved and the means of struggle.
The goal of Julius Ayuk Tabe was to achieve the partition of the country he served for several years, including as software developers at the National Electricity Company of Cameroon (Sonel), now Eneo. He has developed applications that have helped improve billing systems and customer relationship management, among other things. His career will also have led to Nigeria in 2006, within Cisco Systems.
His journey in the contest was not unanimous
At the time of the creation of the Scacuf last February, Julius Ayuk Tabe does not belong to any of the organizations. Neither was he questioned when the demands were expressed in November 2016 through the corporate demonstrations of teachers and lawyers.
By stratagem centered on his financial contributions, and helped by Wilfried Tassang, then president of the Union of English Teachers, Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe joins the movement and is appointed acting president of Ambazonia. His appointment is not unanimous in the group, some find it very young in the dispute that has run since reunification.
Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe returns a certain calm. No aggressiveness emerges from his mine. Not even when he declared himself ready to "fight" and "die" in an interview broadcast by France 24 on November 16th. It was under his direction, however, that the proclamation of the independence of Ambazonia was made on October 1st. The popular protests that have taken place today have led to new clashes between law enforcement and security forces and the population.
The arrest of Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe opens the way to an uncertain future which could lead to the exhaustion of the secessionist inclinations, as the Yaounde regime wishes; or the rise of leaders less inclined to negotiate with the government.
